On Thursday, 26 February 1449, Carnival Day, the last day of Queen Caterina Cornaro in Cyprus, a ceremony was prepared for the occasion in Famagusta. A solemn mass of the Holy Spirit took place in the palace and the Standard of St Mark, duly blessed was presented by Caterina Cornaro to the Captain-General as representative of the Signory.
