The Centre of Visual Arts and Research (CVAR), located on Ermou Street in the heart of the walled city of Nicosia, opened in 2014. CVAR is home to the Costas and Rita Severis collections, which include paintings, antique costumes and memorabilia related to Cyprus and its neighbours. CVAR also houses a library and research centre with over 10,000 volumes available to scholars and casual readers alike. On the ground floor, CVAR hosts a wide range of activities, workshops and seminars supported by the Foundation and its partners to promote understanding and peaceful coexistence.

Come to CVAR for a walk through history, and experience the magnificent views described by travellers and visitors centuries ago! From CVAR's unique and historic location, visitors can admire the tiled roofs, the countless palm trees, the historic churches, mosques and monuments of old Nicosia—all with the Pentadaktylos as a breathtaking backdrop.

The mission of the Centre for Visual Arts and Research (CVAR) is to promote the culture and history of Cyprus, both locally and abroad, and to become a forum for research, discussion and events related to education and culture, in the framework of reconciliation and understanding among all communities of Cyprus.

In particular, through the permanent exhibition and the operation of the Research Centre, CVAR aims to:

  • encourage young people across Cyprus to learn about the cultural, religious, political and social history of the island.
  • enable all communities in Cyprus to increase their understanding and respect of Cyprus’ common cultural heritage.
  • provide a platform for peaceful coexistence and conflict resolution.
  • promote the importance of visual and creative arts to young people across Cyprus.
  • present and interpret the work, perceptions and experiences of international artists to the people of Cyprus.
