Did you know? 26 February 1449

On Thursday, 26 February 1449, Carnival Day, the last day of Queen Caterina Cornaro in Cyprus, a ceremony was prepared for the occasion in Famagusta. A solemn mass of the Holy Spirit took place in the palace and the Standard of St Mark, duly blessed was presented by Caterina Cornaro to the Captain-General as representative of the Signory. In accepting it he promised that the Signory would always defend it against everyone. The Standard was immediately flown in the piazza of Famagusta and orders were given for the same to be done throughout the island.
