PNT-00403 > Troodos, Gladys Peto (1890-1977), watercolour, 1926
Gladys Peto and her husband -a civil servant- were posted in Cyprus from 1926 to 1929. She was an English artist, fashion designer and illustrator. Her art–deco style seems influenced by English illustrator and author Aubrey Beardsley. This watercolour titled 'Troodos' is part of a series of illustrations inspired by Cyprus, some of which were published in her book 'Malta and Cyprus'. A Cypriot girl is leaning against a pine tree, admiring the panorama of the Troodos Mountain. Designed in art-deco style, the girl is wearing the Cypriot traditional head scarf and high boots, and next to her stands a wicker basket with her goods, covered by a conventional colourful woven piece of cloth. Depicting rural elements in an art-deco style appears in an almost humorous vein.
