Sneak Peek: Engraving

This engraving is one of the most interesting and rare depictions of the interior of St. Lazarus Church in Larnaca.

The scene includes the figures of a Greek Orthodox priest and a woman in an exquisitely detailed, quintessentially Greek costume, all set within an atmosphere of devoutness masterfully created by the artist. The impression is of a dimly lit corner of the church, illuminated only by the natural light from a small wall opening and the warm flicker of candles.

A particularly striking feature is the massive marble medieval cistern, used as a baptismal font, which is now housed in the church’s museum. At the center of the scene stands a tripod on a marble base, known as a triskelion, which was traditionally used to support processional icons.

The surrounding walls are filled with icons, enhancing those placed on icon stands, softly illuminated by hanging lanterns. Scattered throughout the church are an array of other icons, processional crosses, and various liturgical items. A candelabrum, large candles placed on the floor, and a psalter complete this vivid depiction.
