In 1222 a Cistercian nunnery existed on the location of today’s Panayia Phaneromeni church.
It is purported that the edifice was constructed with stones from Aronas hill. On the ruins of this nunnery, another Orthodox convent was built.
During the Ottoman era, in 1571, the Ottomans attempted to turn Phaneromeni church into a mosque. But for some reason, all of the assigned imams kept dying and therefor this was given up.
In 1872, a new church was built over the ruins of the eighteenth-century one, which remains the present church.
The iconostasis is older, dating back to 1659, and included 61 icons.
