Untitled (Cyprus Landscape)

Creator:

Lanyon, George Peter (1918-1964)

Date:

1950

Places:

[s.l.]

Description:

The artist belonged to the St Ives School and was influenced by Naum Gabo and Ben Nicholson in the early 1940s. The watercolour depicts an expanse of terraced landscape on a hot summer day. The green is receding and gives way to patches of dry land. The artist’s hand is free and gestural without losing contact with the landscape. Lanyon went on to develop a new kind of landscape painting that sought to capture the viewer’s own experience of being in that landscape.
