The Turkish quarter, Limassol, Cyprus

Creator:

Sinclair, Hugh Montgomerie (1855-1927)

Date:

1881-02

Description:

Sinclair was ADC to Sir Garnet Wolsely in 1878 and remained in Cyprus for some years. He was an amateur painter who made a series of watercolours of Cyprus, sold with the contents of his family home Lady Place in 1990. This is the mosque of Koprulu Haci Ibrahim Ağa, built in 1825 by the person bearing its name. It is situated at the corner of Ankara street and the Garilli river. The mosque was severely damaged by the floods of 1894. The Evkaf, the island’s Moslem religious institution, undertook the restoration the following year. The church of Ayios Antonios can be distinguished in the background. The first bridge was a wooden construction paid by Koprulu Haci Ibrahim Ağa. After the floods, the bridge was rebuilt in stone by the municipality. [reference: Bagiskan Ottoman, Islamic and Islamised Monuments of Cyprus, pp 287-88, 2009]. Stones were collected from the riverbed by the locals in the 1950’s who used them for the construction of their homes.
