Inscribed on verso: Troodos Mountains from Bairactar Bastion Nicosia. February 1882

Description:

The Sinclair was ADC to Dir Garnet Wolsely in 1878 and remained in Cyprus for some years. He was an amateur painter who made a series of watercolours of Cyprus, sold with the contents of his family home Lady Place in 1990. The watercolour portrays the Constanzo bastion of the walls of Nicosia with the Bairaktar Mosque built in the 18th century over the tomb of the standard bearer who was killed during the siege of Nicosia. The flag and standard were laid on top of his gravestone. Two figures of Turkish women covered in white from head to toes seem to be walking towards the mosque. Being a raised ground, it affords a view of the Troodos mountain range.
