Description:
This is a painting of orientalising Cyprus by the British. The means of transport presented, the taxi, is a mere cart, usually drawn by oxen, but in this case, drawn by a horse. The passengers, two elegant British ladies are seated on the wooden blanks of the cart and a well dressed British gentleman with a white stiff collar is seeing them off. The driver wears a turban, a Turk, while another figure is looking in amazement. Whether this is imaginary or not is difficult to assess. What is obvious are the intentions of the British artist who wanted to present Cyprus as the back of beyond, where nothing like British transport existed.
