Description:

Many visitors had only few hours in Cyprus, their ships stopping for refueling or loading at the harbour of Larnaca. In such cases, the travelers often chose to visit the Monastery of The Holy Cross, or Mount Croce or Stavrovouni, only a few kilometers from the harbour. They were interested to see the famous cross of the Good Thief and the piece of the Holy Cross of Christ which St Helena was purported to have deposited in the monastery. Thus, the inscription of the watercolour is erroneous, when it titles it “Top of Katherina”. The monastery was one of the main pilgrim sites on the island situated on the top of a rocky, loaf shaped mountain. Many early travelers mention the existence of a temple dedicated to Venus on the top, remnants of which remained even after the monastery was built. Stavrovouni suffered from many fires and was reconstructed a number of times. It was abandoned in mid 19th century, although now it has an active monastic community.
