Description:

The poster ‘Our Allies the Colonies’ is of the series of the British Colonial Empire. It portrays a soldier of the Cyprus Regiment. Dark skinned with dark hair, almond shaped brown eyes and a slight moustache, he seems to show little of the determination and self-confidence expected of the British military man. He gazes rather awkwardly into space, his white teeth showing through thick lips and contrasting with the dark skin. The poster demonstrated that the empire was multi-national and multi-racial and was also designed to stimulate pride in the members of the extended imperial family. The soldier belongs to the Cyprus Regiment and is framed by the names of all counties belonging to the empire except India which was an empire (under British rule).
