Description:

Gwendolen Frere was the daughter of Judge Bertle Frere who arrived in 1897 and took up judicial duty in the British administration of Cyprus. She was an amateur artist who executed a series of watercolours of Nicosia and Kyrenia. This watercolour portrays part of a house in Kyrenia concentrating on outbuildings such as the water well, the cistern and a fenced vegetable garden. They all appear near the kitchen which is identified by a tall chimney. The entire complex reveals the efforts of Cypriot householders to make their dwelling spaces as self subsistent as possible.
