Description:

The cartoon features Cyprus and Disraeli lifting the Ottoman Sultan on a wall bearing the inscription ‘Asian frontier’. Both the content of the cartoon and the inscription that follows underneath it allude to the so called ‘Eastern Question’. The Ottoman Empire, aptly described as the ‘sick man of Europe’, is in decline. Britain acquires Cyprus from the Ottomans in return of support against Russian encroachment. The appearance of the two doves might signify peace and union between Britain and the Ottoman Empire.
