Description:

General Luigi Palma Cesnola was the first American Consul to Cyprus, (1865-1877). He made a good fortune and a bad name for himself for plundering Cypriot antiquities and shipping them out of the island without leaving a record of the details of his excavations that could help identify the sites of origin for the various artifacts. He was the founder of the Metropolitan Museum of New York where many of the Cypriot antiquities shipped out of the island are exhibited. Rawson followed Cesnola to Cyprus where he drafted sketches of sites and artifacts. The engraving features a portrait of Cesnola on the top right and, on the lower part, a scene from the excavations. Cesnola, dressed in white and protected by a white umbrella from the strong sun of Cyprus, is giving instruction to his overseer Besbesh. A number of workers are lining up in preparation of a new excavation.
