Description:

Sidney Vacher and Edward L’Anson were two architects sent to Cyprus by the British Government to survey the monuments on the island in 1882. They published their findings in a series of articles in the transactions of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1882-1883) accompanied by approximately 55 sketches. The engraving is a detailed south elevation of St. Nicholas cathedral. The artist worked under stressful condition as he noted: “ I should add that in sketching I labored under many disadvantages…while my back was turned and I was taking a dimension at the other side of the building , they looted my measuring rod, sketching tools and other valuables, though not a soul was to be seen either before or after the occurrence.”
