Greek Cypriot Monk

Creator:

Rule, Colin

Date:

ca. 1950

Places:

Cyprus

Inscriptions:

Inscribed on verso: 'verso on Label: Greek Cypriot Monk'

Description:

The smiling face of a Cypriot monk captured the interest of the artist. It diverges from the negative western stereotype of the Greek monk being a cunning, crafty and calculative creature. The chubby Cypriot figure depicted here exudes benevolence and appears to be in a state of exuberance. His face radiates worldly joy and does away with the Orthodox monastic ideal of an inner state of sobriety that monks should attain. He is wearing the typical cap worn by monks and his white beard comes into sharp contrast with his black robes. The face is marked with the passing of time and difficulties of years passed.
