Description:

Orig Avedissian belongs to the Armenian family of the Avedissian photographers who lived in Cyprus in the early part of the 20th century. The artist in his pencil sketch presents the main arch and entrance of Palazzo Provveditore, the Venetian Palace of Famagusta. He is positioned in the courtyard of the Palazzo, depicting part of the buildings on the right which are presently used by the antiquities department. The entrance arch affords a view of the cathedral of St. Nicholas. Turkish women covered in black appear walking in the background. In combination with the artist’s successful shading and shadowing, an atmospheric effect is achieved.
