Description:
G.H. Gray travelled in the Near East in the 20s and 30s and produced a series of topographical watercolours. He lived in Cyprus for a while and gave painting lessons to British expatriates in Kyrenia. He was one-eyed and impoverished. He was forced to leave Cyprus in 1956. This is one of the most probable locations on the island combining cypress trees and water and lies is the surrounding of the Larnaca salt lake by the Tekke of Umm Haram. In both the Greek and Turkish tradition in Cyprus, Cypress trees are identified with burial spaces. In the centre of the picture, a Greek shepherd appears in the middle of his flock of sheep. The watercolour projects an interesting interplay of greens and blues
