Description:

This 18th C. engraving portrays the Greek-Cypriots in Turkish costume, whose faces are not covered. It depicts a moment in the history of the island when it was under Ottoman rule. The elite Ottoman class is represented here by two females dressed in purely Ottoman attire. They bear the insignia of the ruling class in the form of tall headdresses. Moreover, Ottoman artifacts such as the zarf on the small table, the rose water bottle (merreh) and the musical instrument attest to the material culture and lifestyle of the Ottomans. A female seated on the floor cross-legged and a standing figure leaning leisurely against the pole smack of what was perceived as the Ottoman temperament of rahat (peace and comfort). The latter much impressed and was widely attested by western artists.
