Description:
A.Y. Bingham came to Cyprus on board the Sunbeam travelling as the personal artist of Lady Annie Brassey. The engraving is based on one of his sketches published in the book Sunshine and Storm in the East (1878) which was also reproduced in a German magazine. The Latin abbey of Bellapais built in 1300 is situated at the edge of a cliff which overlooks the sea. The artist employs artistic license in the topography by omitting the existence of a valley between the abbey and the sea. The presence of Turkish figures in the forefront contrasts with a Christian religious site in the background. The appearance of a tall steeple suggests that the church was in use by the Orthodox village at the time.
