Description:
After 1926 the Empire Marketing Board took up the responsibility of spreading the idea of imperialism and the concept of the empire as beneficent. Posters and postcards were distributed to the public and many British companies incorporated the imperial theme in their advertisements. Posters such as ‘Buy Cypriot Cigarettes’ with an exotic flavour were issued by the Empire Marketing Board urging the public to buy the relevant product. The Moufflon or agrino (ovice ammon) in the centre of the poster is the sole indigenous Cypriot mammal. It lives in the less accessible parts of the Paphos forest. The male has large horns, its numbers of rings indicating the animal’s age. It is hardly an object connected with smoking but was often used as one of the symbols of Cyprus. The whole presentation alludes to paintings of the Monarch of the Glen (as for example, the painting by Sir Edward Landseer).
