Description:

F. Milveton Drake was invited to Cyprus by the administration as an engineer to help with a project. Drake gave special attention to the fortification of Famagusta and Nicosia. The artist excelled himself in pencil drawings rather than watercolours. This watercolour depicts a northeastern view of Bellapais Abbey in which a young girl sitting awkwardly on a mount of stones forms a stark juxtaposition between the ancient and the modern.
