Description:

F. Milveton Drake was invited to Cyprus by the administration as an engineer to help with a project. Drake gave special attention to the fortification of Famagusta and Nicosia. The artist excelled himself in pencil drawings rather than watercolours. The picture depicts the entrance to Famagusta from the sea, including the 700 year old portcullis. On top of the Porta Del Mare (Sea Gate) stands the Lion of St Mark, his foot on an open book , testifying a period of peace. The Gate was built by the Venetian Prefect Nicolao Prioli whose inscription lies above it “ Nicolao Prioli Cypri Praefecto MCCCCLXXXXVI”(1496). The round tower has battlements with arrow-slits.
