Bedestan

Creator:

Kissonergis, Ioannis, 1889-1963

Date:

ca.1925

Description:

The artist’s works are of a historical value as they portray Cyprus of the early twentieth century from a Greek Cypriot point of view. Through a half opened door, the viewer can see part of the old church of St Nicholas of the English built in the 14th century. In the 16th century, it served as the Greek Orthodox cathedral. In the late 18th century, it was turned into a bedestan (covered bazaar). During the British period, it was used for storing grain. Today, it functions as a cultural centre. Kissonergis insisted on portraying monuments of Cyprus and quaint figures or charming lanes.
