Description:
The artist’s works are of a historical value as they portray Cyprus of the early twentieth century from a Greek Cypriot point of view. It is obvious that Kissonergis was, to a large extent, influenced by the British artists in his subject matter and representation. The picture is a scene of the Orient where the central figure is a hoca. In the background, figures loom in the dark alley. They are surrounded by dilapidating buildings. The darkness of the picture is provokingly mysterious. The eye wants to enter the dark alley and see more. Nicosia had several such corners giving it an oriental outlook. This aspect was utilized by the artist in response to increasing foreign interest in it.
