Date:

1881

Inscriptions:

Inscribed: Turkish work men

Description:

Donisthorpe Donne was district officer in Limassol from 1880 to 1882. He was the person who decided and designed the costumes of the Pioneer Regiment. He was based in Limassol but travelled all over the island and enjoyed illustrating the country and its people. Variations in the costumes portrayed by Donne attest to ethnic diversity on the island. The Turkish workers depicted here are given a different colour scheme in their clothing from of the Greeks. They appear in coloured socks, waistbands, shirts and headdress. One of the most conspicuous features of difference is the white pantaloons worn by the Turks as opposed to the black ones used by the Greeks.
