This watercolour was created during a period of civil unrest and guerrilla fighting instigated by the local Greek organization EOKA against the British. It provides a rare insight into military tents used by British troops at the time.
Given the political context in which the drawing was created, the artist’s choice of theme appears more significant than the actual detail of army gear illustrated in the watercolour. Iron beds, the wireless, uniforms and boots feature haphazardly in the picture. The dry grey and white colours reflect a somber army atmosphere.
