Writing to his mother, Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs, expressed his fears on the turmoil within the Legislative Council:

We are in a political crisis, the elected members have thrown out the budget and unless we can arrange something by January 1st we shall have no money to carry on with. So we have to be in constant touch with the Secretary of State and I spent most of Christmas Day and Sunday ciphering telegrams. It is all most difficult having a political crisis so soon after one has arrived and I am afraid that the Moslems are rather out to block one in every way-there are two now in with Sir R., a Greek and a Turk, so I shall hear the news soon…..The two Moslems here just came out and I gather are still determined to block us- that means more telegrams for me.
