The Englishman John Locke, during his journey to Jerusalem, stopped also in Cyprus:

The 30th in the morning we ridde to a chapell, where they say St Katherin was borne. The chapell is in old Famagusta, the which was destroyed by Englishmen, and is cleane overthrown to the ground, to this day desolate and not inhabited by any person, it was of a great circuit, and thre be to this day mountains of faire, great and strong, buildings, and not only there, but also in many places of the Lland. Moreover, when they digge, plowe, or trench, they finde sometimes olde antient coins, some of gold, some of silver and some of copper, yea and many tombes and vautes with sepulchres in them.
