The American missionary Lorenzo Warriner Pease noted in his diary:

Many coins of Ptolemeus as well as the Roman consuls and emperors have been found at the ruins of Citium here, but I do not know if any have been discovered of Venetian or Genoese origin, though they have been found elsewhere. This is pretty clear evidence that it was destroyed before the Venetians etc. had possession, and probably about the Christian era. Earthen lamps of Grecian construction, sarcophagus etc. have also been found.
