The ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs, Rupert Gunnis, went through a quiet March celebration, not knowing what was in store for him the following year:
Greek Independence Day, so the whole of the town a mass of blue and white flags. Eight extra zaptiehs placed round the house in case of trouble. Had to get up at 6.30 to place them, spent most of the day here, inspecting the guards. After dinner to the Depot to see the arrangements there, very good indeed. The police all ready, a most loyal and efficient body, got to bed 1.30 am. Everything passed off quietly.
