Sir Garnet Wolseley and his wife had their Christmas dinner in the newly constructed Government House:

A large wooden house with by no means well-fitting doors and windows, lofty rooms and heaps of windows, no stoves or fireplaces, perched on a rocky hill where it enjoys every blast of the wind is not the pleasantest of residences in this chilly weather. The house is so large that the absence of furniture makes it look dreary to an appalling degree.
