Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs, had his first experience of a Turkish funeral:

To Fakkri Bey’s funeral, badly managed as they kept us waiting 1 ½ hours outside the mosque! The coffin lay on a table in the porch covered with an embroidered cloth and his pack-coat. A very short service, two minutes, and then we all walked to the cemetery outside Kyrenia Gate where I left the entertainment. The body of a poor orange seller who had died at the same time was also borne in the procession in a packing case – like coffin. Mail in, no special news.
