29 March 1927 - Rupert Gunnis, ADC to Sir Ronald Storrs, had a special passion for antiquities and excavations:

To my excavations in the afternoon-they are by Mr Christophides’s house and they have found a flight of steps which I imagine to be the remains of one of the medieval churches destroyed by the Venetians when they rebuilt the walls of Nicosia. In the evening all of us to the service in the Ayia Sophia being a special service for the “night of power” all the exterior illuminated and the interior a maze of lights. A very impressive service which was well attended. It made us sad to see a Christian cathedral used to worship a false prophet in.
