Ruby, wife of Skouriotissa Mines director Charles F Jackson, wrote to her sister about her wonderful life on the island:

I do like this place. It grows on one each day. The freedom here is so different from any place else. Can you imagine me getting out of bed any time I want to, this morning is the first time I haven’t eaten with Charlie, eating my breakfast, talking over the meals with the cook and then playing tennis with Miss Buckley before school hours, then sewing or writing. The house boy is proving to be fine, I do not turn my hand to do one bit of house work, he makes the beds and often turns them at night and I just give orders. Miss Buckley sees to the children’s clothes and dressing them. She is fine. I can hear Betty now at her French lesson. Frank is picking up his words and letters now.
