Ruby Jackson, wife of the director of Skouriotissa mines, writing to her sister commented on life in Cyprus:

Besides we have better things than you do, for the fruit is wonderful. We are getting Good Housekeeping, National Geographic, Pictorial Review, The American and mining magazines. We have besides the use of the Literary Digest and Saturday Evening Post. We miss newspapers. You bet we did have turkey for Thanksgiving and last Sunday had another. Turkeys flourish here and are cheaper than “butcher’s meat”, as the natives say. We had a five course dinner cooked by Theodoros and served by Polycarpos. My hand aches. I have done much writing! My love to all.
