Lorenzo Warriner Pease, the first American missionary to Cyprus, commented on the character and reputation of Osman Pasha:

Osman Pasha, the late Pasha of the island died at Petra last Friday. He was formerly a courier, but gradually rose until he became an important instrument in the destruction of the janissaries and in other similar bloody scenes. He must have been ignorant, is reported to have been a man devoted much to sensual pleasures. His crooked legislation in trying to regulate prices is easily accounted for. A courier was immediately sent to Constantinople on being informed of his decease.
