In a letter to the Secretary of State, US Consul Taylor Belcher referred to Archbishop Makarios’ visit to the US:

As expected Makarios visit has been biggest story every day for local Greek language press for past two weeks. Emotional strain evident in community finds resultant outlet in contemplating lengthy reports of enthusiastic reception given their ethnarch. Press comments take pains to make distinction between US government which “gave gratuitous insult” in announcing refusal to receive Makarios in Washington and US people who receive him as “idealist in land where idealists are everybody’s heroes.”
