24 May 1958

From the diaries of US Consul General Taylor Belcher and Edith Belcher:

Early to Kyrenia and preparation for Paul’s party – will be a terrible horde of us- nearly thirty – five. We went swimming before lunch. Lola and I went on a search for pitas tonight. Town this morning swarming with troops and police, the latter to keep the heavy traffic moving. Every Kyrenian seems to shop on Saturday morning and it’s quite fantastic to be in the middle of it. No bakery opened – no pitas there; tavern can’t sell me that many; told me to go to the furno direct.
