Colonel Benjamin Donisthorpe Alsop Donne of the Cyprus Pioneer Corps, following his transfer to Nicosia, wrote of the island’s winter scenery:

Continuing the road next morning I covered 25 miles in time for lunch with Bor and Inglis at the Commissioner’s house Nicosia, after which I went out to stop with Colonel Gordon at his new house outside the walls-until I could find lodgings in town. The country all round was looking very fine and wintry with the Troodos Mountains completely wrapped in snow away in the distance and the fine Northern Range looking strangely near in its covering of snow.
