11 October 1835: Lorenzo Warriner Pease was happy to hear that a Turkish teacher wanted to establish a school where both the Koran and the Scriptures could be read:
“Today a Turk who is teaching here several Franks called with young Boscovich, and wished for some help to establish a school. He told me that the children must first be taught to read the Koran (and a book teaching their religious rights) then a book on the sciences in four large volumes, then they might read the Scriptures. The great object seems to be to establish a school to which a few Franks may go. I infer this from the interest which Boscovich feels in it. The teacher said that the books which I had given him were very good and had extracts from the Koran.”
