Village in Cyprus

Creator:

Reilly, Bernard

Date:

1948

Places:

Cyprus

Description:

No clues as to the exact identity of this village are provided in the painting. The long storerooms cum barns suggest that this is a village in the Mesaoria plains. The presence of a church steeple and the absence of a minaret also indicate that this was inhabited by Greeks. The extensive water surrounded by man made stone banks indicates that the village bordered a river that might have flooded in the past or was built near a lake or water reservoir. This charming view is framed on the left by a huge eucalyptus tree often found by riverbeds. Eucalyptus trees were imported from Australia by the British in 1878 in order to drain the swamps of Cyprus which caused malaria.
