Description:

This is the German artist who visited Greece and was commissioned by King Otto after 1845 to paint the monuments of Athens and the Peloponnese. He was also commissioned to visit Asia Minor, Palestine and Persia for the same purpose. Stopping on the way in Cyprus, he commissioned geographical research and produced the first complete map of the island. The view is taken from what is commonly known the tower of Rigena in the Akamas peninsula. The ruins were never related to a medieval Queen (Regina) but to a monastery which once stood there. The perspective includes the bay of Chrysochou and the Troodos mountain range where Mount Olympus stands. One can see what is probably the village of Neo Chorio. The oil painting belongs to the traditional German classical school.
