Description:

This is one of a series of etchings done by F. Milveton Drake, who was invited to Cyprus by the administration as an engineer to help with a project. Drake gave special attention to the fortification of Famagusta and Nicosia. The view from Martinengo bastion affords an extensive panorama of the walls and the dry moat. The British, when first in Cyprus, used to play golf on the walls of Famagusta! The sight of a Canadian windmill in the background helps to project the monuments into a modern setting; thus, adding a temporal dimension to the stillness of time posed by the ruinous fortifications. The same detail also attests to the emergence of trade with the west and the employment of modern methods in water supply to replace the traditional Persian wheel.
