View from Government House, Nicosia, Cyprus

Creator:

Villiers, Ann (d. 1963)

Date:

1899

Description:

Ann Villiers was the daughter of Governor Sir William Haynes Smith (1898-1904). She lived in Government House. This watercolour is an interesting view of the expanse behind Government House including the village of Strovolos, nowadays an integral part of greater Nicosia. The riverbed and the olive groves remain landmark features of the area to the present day. In 1878, Strovolos was a small village outside Nicosia which grew after the Government House was built in the area, at the border between Strovolos and Ayioi Omologites. The village is set against the background of the Troodos mountain range, and forms part of a perspective of the hinterland.
