Venetian house in Nicosia

Creator:

Meikle, George (b.1963)

Date:

2003

Inscriptions:

Inscribed on verso label: Venetian house in Nicosia

Description:

The artist chose to depict a Lusignan house in the walled city of Nicosia. Some scholars believe this to be the house of Anna Lusignan whereas others adhere to the view that this is a rich merchant’s abode. Today it is used by the Turkish Cypriot administration as a museum. The Gothic windows above the entrance are much admired today. The castle like appearance of the roof adds to the monumentality of the place and contrasts sharply to the mundane activities of a group of individuals relaxing by the entrance. The scene demonstrates the effect to which material constructions of the past that signified power, wealth and status are now fully embedded in the social landscape of everydayness.
