Description:

Born in Bucharest, Romania and moved to Munich in 1970, graphic designer, did woodblock work, wall painting, musical and theatrical activities. The artist spent some time in Cyprus pre-1974 and was a friend with the Cypriot painter Adamantios Diamantis. She was an ethnographer intrigued by the Cypriot culture and life and tried to adopt her work and her titles to reflect Cyprus. The woodprint depicts a Rumanian woman shovelling bread into a traditional Cypriot earthen oven. Her Rumanian identity is strongly marked by her headdress and costume. It is in fact the artist herself, an art ethnographer. She stands in front of a wooden house typical of lodgings in Rumania which are not to be found anywhere in Cyprus. Semiotically, as the woman shovels bread into the oven, she appears mediating between the Rumanian cultural space on the left and a quintessentially Cypriot one on the right. The latter is defined by such elements as the earthen oven, a clay water jag, a cactus bush and a board carrying bread.
