Inscribed in lower centre: Turkish Cypriot Peasant of 1900

Description:

By the 1900, the Turkish Cypriots had started abandoning their white pantaloons vraka and utilized the blue colour, much lighter than that used by the Greek Cypriots. They continued wearing multicolored stockings and were very fond of including embroidery and embellishments on their attire. The Turkish Cypriot’s peasant gilet is heavily decorated and his fez is embellished with strips of handmade flowers. This is the sort of dress men wore on festive occasions like the Bayram. The man’s head is slightly bent to the right and he wears a rather docile facial expression. This strikes a contrast to his ceremonial masculine outfit although the contradiction might simply be the result of inadequate artistic skill.
