Description:
Gladys Emma Peto was an English artist, fashion designer and illustrator. She married Cuthbert Lindsay Emmerson of the Royal Army medical Corps and, during the 1920’s, she travelled with him to Malta, Cyprus and Egypt. An outcome of her travels was the book ‘Malta and Cyprus’ and ‘The Egypt of the Sojourner’ published by J.M. Dent for the Outward Bound Library. In her art deco style, she was clearly influenced by Aubrey Beardsley. Cypress trees are central in this picture since the artist contended that the island’s name derived from these trees. The half way house in Kophinou village, a coffee shop, operated as a station between Nicosia and Limassol. A number of contrasts presented in the picture allude to the temporal dimension whereby forms of modern transport are juxtaposed to the traditional means. The villager with his donkey and the driver with his car form the focal point of the picture which is repeated in the background. The presence of children in the picture stresses their prevailing role in Cypriot social settings as opposed to a less conspicuous role in similar English contexts.
